You Won't Find Coaching Like This Anywhere Else in England
Sensei Ian Cuthbert
8th Dan Black Belt. 55 years of experience.
Ian Cuthbert holds an 8th Dan, placing him among only a handful of instructors at this level in the entire United Kingdom. That is not just experience. That is mastery. He founded UKA in 1981 with one goal. To help people discover what they are truly capable of. Over four decades later, he is still on the mat, still coaching and still producing champions.
When your child trains at UKA, they train under the best.

More than Karate.
You’re signing up for everything that comes with it.
Confidence
The kind that walks into a classroom differently. That puts their hand up. That tries again after getting it wrong.
Karate builds it quietly. Then one day — you notice.
Self-Defence
Real skills. Practical knowledge. The ability to stay calm and safe in situations that matter. Taught responsibly by coaches who know exactly how to do it.
For kids and adults alike — peace of mind is priceless.
Discipline
Not the rigid, serious kind. The kind that means they finish things. Focus when it matters. Show up even when they don’t feel like it.
Teachers notice. Parents notice. Kids feel the difference.
Fun
Yes, really. Our classes are energetic, encouraging and genuinely enjoyable. This isn’t boot camp.
The proof? Most students don’t want to leave when the session ends.
Fitness
Train with Champions
Strength. Coordination. Stamina. The kind of fitness that comes from genuinely enjoying the way you move — not forcing yourself through something you dread.
(Better than a gym. More fun than a gym. Far better snacks after.)
Your child doesn’t just train at UKA. They train with the same coaches who have produced National, European and World Champions.
That standard. That belief. Every single session.

One club. Six ways to find yourself.
1. Traditional Karate
We use a mix of styles, taking the best of each discipline to form our unique UKA syllabus. The foundation and tradition underpin everything we do at UKA. We also include grappling, wrestling, and submissions as part of our training.
2. Full Contact Karate
Intense. Structured. Empowering. For those who want to really test what they’re made of.
3. Competition Squad
Ready to compete? Our squad has produced World Champions. Yours could be next.
4. Yang Style Tai Chi
Slow down. Breathe. Find your flow. Tai Chi for adults who want movement that feels like medicine.
5. Self-Defence
Practical. Real-world. Confidence-building. No martial arts background needed — just the desire to feel safer.
6. School Programmes
UKA in your school. Working with schools, councils and communities across Essex and London to bring karate to more kids.
